In this class participants will gain experience in the metal shop working with the drill press, vertical, horizontal and portable band saws, angle grinder and MIG welder. Participants will become acquainted with safety precautions in the shop and use destructive testing to gain knowledge about how and where welds break. This class is intended for those with little to no experience in the metal shop. For members and future members of Port City Makerspace this class will also serve as a “check out” for all of the tools used. Individuals with no metal shop experience are encouraged to take this class before taking future welding or machining courses. The class is expected to last approximately 3 hours but if participants want to stay longer and hone their skills the instructor will be available after class to talk shop and clean up. Minimum age for this class is 18.
Required gear: All clothing should be non-synthetic (cotton or canvas is recommended), Long pants, long sleeve shirt, boots or other closed toe shoes, hair-tie for long hair, light duty work gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection. We recommend you bring your own safety gear, but we have equipment on hand if you don’t have any.
Class is 4-7PM, Please arrive at 3:45. Instructor reserves the right to cancel class if fewer than three participants enroll.
Maximum class size is 6 people. Slots will be filled on first come basis, pre-registration and pre-payment is required.
