Guitar Sundays: Live Guitar Performances
at Portsmouth Public Library & Portsmouth Music and Arts Center
Sundays, 3 PM

This spring, the Portsmouth Public Library and PMAC (Portsmouth Music and Arts Center), in association with the Boston Classical Guitar Society, will continue their series of live guitar performances called Guitar Sundays. These free concerts will be held at 3 PM on the first Sunday of the month, alternating locations between the Levenson Room at the Portsmouth Public Library and the Haas Family Gallery and Recital Hall at PMAC.

Drawing from a rich selection of guitar talent from both New Hampshire and the greater Boston area, the series of recitals will highlight the versatility and range of the guitar from classical to jazz to acoustic.

March 25 @ Portsmouth Public Library
Robert Bekkers, Classical Guitar

Born near Eindhoven, Netherlands, Robert Bekkers earned his performing and teaching degrees (Bachelor and Master of Music) at the Conservatory of Maastricht. During the seven years there, he won a scholarship to study contemporary music with Angelo Gilardino in Italy. He has performed in master classes for internationally-known guitarists such as David Russell and Pepe Romero. After his education Robert developed his career as a soloist and chamber musician, playing with orchestras, choirs, and giving solo recitals. Currently he is completing his Doctor in Musical Arts (DMA) in classical guitar at the New England Conservatory under Eliot Fisk. For more information, visit dutchguitar.com.

Don’t miss the other two spring concerts:

April 8 @PMAC
Harvey Reid, Acoustic Guitar

May 6 @ Portsmouth Public Library
The Hampton Trio, Classical Guitar, Mandolin and Mandola.

Why The Guitar?
The guitar is one of the easiest and one of the most difficult instruments to play. From the 3 simple chords that form the basis of the blues and rock n’ roll, to the improvisational depths of jazz and the profound counterpoint of Bach, it is easy to appreciate why the guitar is so popular. From simple to complex, the range and styles of music expressed through a guitar is breathtaking.

Beethoven considered the guitar as a miniature orchestra. With a range of nearly four octaves the Guitar can be played chordal like a piano, percussive like a drum, and pizzicato like the violin. It is expressive, melodic, and lush while at the same time, can be harsh, brash, and aggressive. All in all, it’s quite a sight to be seen and heard live and up close in a personal intimate setting.

Come hear for yourself! First Sunday is a collaboration between the Portsmouth Pubic Library and the Portsmouth Music and Art Center.

This series is produced and curated by Mitch Shuldman, Librarian Emeritus from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Mitch is himself, a classical guitarist and was the host of a classical guitar radio show [Excursions] that aired on NHPR during its early years (1981-84). He is a former member and Chair of the Portsmouth School Board and currently sings with Portsmouth Pro Musica and performs with Noteworthy, a classical flute and guitar duo.
